How to join a Google Play closed test: a guide for testers

A developer has invited you to test their app before it's released on Google Play. Thank you — new developers can't publish without testers like you. This page explains how to join in two minutes and how to be a tester who really helps.
How to join
- Use the right Google account. Open the invitation link with the same Google account you use in the Play Store on your phone. This is the most common reason joining fails.
- Join the Google Group first, if the developer sent you one. Some tests only accept members of a group.
- Open the opt-in link the developer sent you. You'll see a page explaining what testers do.
- Tap the button to become a tester.
- Install the app from Google Play — use the link on that page, or search for the app in the Play Store on your phone.
From then on, the test version updates automatically like any other app.
How to be a helpful tester
- Open the app regularly during the 14 days, not just once. Google looks at whether testers actually used the app.
- Do the small tasks the developer sends. They're designed to take a few minutes.
- Say what confused you, not only what crashed. “I didn't understand this screen” is very useful.
- Check updates. When the developer says something is fixed, see if it really is.
Sending feedback
- Use the feedback email or form the developer gave you — it's also shown on the opt-in page.
- You can send private feedback through Google Play.
- Testers can't leave public reviews for test versions, and your feedback doesn't affect the app's public rating. So be honest.
Problems and fixes
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| “App not available” or no install button | Switch to the Google account you joined with in the Play Store (tap your profile picture), or send the developer your Play Store email |
| The link doesn't open anything | The test may have just been published — it can take several hours. Try again later |
| “Not available in your country” | Tell the developer your country so they can add it |
| You can't join at all | If the developer uses a Google Group, join the group first |
Leaving the test
Please wait until the developer tells you the 14 days are over. After that, you can leave from the same opt-in page and, if you like, install the public version once it's released.
